Safari timings: the quick answer
| Safari type | Morning slot | Evening slot |
| Jeep safari | 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM | 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM |
| Canter safari (Dhikala only) | 6:00 AM to 11:30 AM | 12:00 PM to 5:30 PM |
Safari timings are subject to change based on seasonal variations and Forest Department regulations. Always confirm exact timings before your visit.

Jeep safari timings
Jeep safari runs 2 shifts daily across all 8 zones: Jhirna, Dhela, Bijrani, Phato, Mohaan, Garjia, Durgadevi and Sitabani.
Morning shift: 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM
3 hours inside the zone. This is the most sought-after slot across every zone. Wildlife is most active in the early hours before the heat sets in. Tigers, leopards and elephants move more freely between 6 and 9 AM than at any other time of day.
Evening shift: 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM
3 hours inside the zone. Animals become active again as temperatures drop in the late afternoon. Good for elephant sightings and deer movement. Entry into the national park is strictly prohibited after sunset. The evening slot ends before that threshold.
Both shifts are 3 hours long. Both follow the same rules inside the zone. The difference is what wildlife does during those 3 hours.
Canter safari timings
Canter safari runs exclusively in the Dhikala zone. 1 canter seats 16 passengers.
Morning shift: 6:00 AM to 11:30 AM
5.5 hours inside Dhikala. Significantly longer than the jeep morning slot. The extra time matters in Dhikala because the zone is large. The Patli Dun grasslands and Ramganga reservoir corridor cover a wide area and the canter needs more time to do the zone justice.
Evening shift: 12:00 PM to 5:30 PM
5.5 hours inside Dhikala. Starts at noon and runs until just before sunset. A full afternoon inside one of the most scenic zones in the reserve.
The canter slots are nearly double the length of jeep slots. For Dhikala specifically, that extended time inside the zone is a genuine advantage.
Morning shift vs evening shift: which is better?
Morning shift: 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM (jeep) / 6:00 AM to 11:30 AM (canter)
Morning is the better slot for wildlife sightings. Consistently and across every zone.
Tigers are most active between 6 and 9 AM. They’re moving, hunting and crossing open ground before the heat builds. By 10 AM most have retreated into dense cover for the day. The morning light is also better for photography.
Dew on the forest floor, mist in the sal canopy, early bird calls, the morning shift delivers an atmosphere the evening slot simply doesn’t have.
Morning slots also fill faster. If you’re booking Bijrani or Garjia in peak season, morning slots go first. Always.
Evening shift: 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM (jeep) / 12:00 PM to 5:30 PM (canter)
Evening slots are not a fallback. They produce good sightings, particularly for elephants. Large herds cross the Kosi floodplain in Garjia during late afternoon. Deer are highly active near grassland edges across Bijrani and Dhela in the evening.
The golden light before sunset also makes the 4:30 to 5:30 PM window excellent for photography.
If morning slots are fully booked, the evening slot is a solid alternative. Don’t write it off.
The verdict:
Morning for tiger sightings. Evening for elephants and atmospheric light. If you can only do one safari, take the morning.
Zone opening months and how timings connect
Timings only apply when the zone is open. Book according to opening dates.
Core zones:
| Zone | Opening period | Safari type |
| Dhikala | 15 November to 15 June | Canter only |
| Bijrani | 15 October to 30 June | Jeep |
| Jhirna | Open year-round | Jeep |
| Dhela | Open year-round | Jeep |
| Garjia | Open year-round | Jeep |
| Durgadevi | 15 November to 15 June | Jeep |
Eco-tourism zones:
| Zone | Opening period | Safari type |
| Phato | Open year-round | Jeep |
| Sitabani | 15 October to 15 June | Jeep |
| Mohaan | 15 October to 15 June | Jeep |
Jhirna, Dhela and Phato are the only 3 zones open year-round including during monsoon. Every other zone has a fixed opening and closing date. Timings apply only when the zone is active.
What to expect at each shift
Morning shift in peak season (November to June)
The forest wakes up fast. By 6:15 AM the guides are already reading tracks from overnight tiger movement. Alarm calls from deer and langurs are the first signal that something larger is nearby. This is the hour the forest is most alive.
Temperature at 6 AM in November to February is cold. Carry a jacket. In March to June it’s comfortable by 6 AM but heats up quickly by 8:30 AM. The 3-hour window is well timed.
Evening shift in peak season
Temperatures cool after 4 PM. Deer come out to graze along forest edges in large numbers. Predators follow prey. Evening sightings tend to be more open and relaxed than the intense early morning activity.
The light between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM is golden. For photographers this is the most rewarding window of the day.
Monsoon months (July to September)
Only Jhirna, Dhela and Phato run safaris during monsoon. The same timings apply but visibility inside the forest is lower due to dense vegetation. Wildlife is more dispersed. Morning slots in monsoon still outperform evening slots for active wildlife movement.
