Jeep safari: what you need to know
Jeep safari is the most preferred and widely chosen mode of wildlife exploration in Jim Corbett. It runs across 8 zones: Jhirna, Dhela, Bijrani, Phato, Mohaan, Garjia, Durgadevi and Sitabani.
The vehicle is an open 4×4 jeep. No roof, open sides, full exposure to the forest. Every sound, every smell, every movement registers immediately. For wildlife enthusiasts and photographers, this is the format that delivers.
Each jeep accommodates up to 6 adults and 2 children below 12 years as per Forest Department guidelines. The group is yours alone. No strangers, no shared experience, just your party and your guide.
Zone, driver and naturalist guide are all allocated by the Forest Department through an automated computerised system. No operator can influence these assignments. The system ensures fair distribution across all zones.
Price: Rs. 7,500 per jeep
This covers up to 6 adults and 2 children below 12 years. Includes booking assistance and service fee, all permit charges, driver fee, jeep charges and entry fee.
Canter safari: what you need to know
Canter safari runs exclusively in the Dhikala zone. That’s the only zone. If you want a canter, Dhikala is where you’re going.
The canter is an open-sided vehicle with a roof, seating up to 16 passengers. It’s a shared experience. Your group shares the vehicle with other visitors. The route is fixed and the canter covers the broader forest roads of Dhikala, which is one of the most scenic and wildlife-rich areas of the reserve.
For larger groups, the canter makes practical and financial sense. Dhikala’s vast Patli Dun grasslands and the Ramganga reservoir make it one of the most rewarding zones in Corbett. Accessing it on a canter is more economical per head than splitting into multiple jeeps.
Price: Rs. 2,700 per seat
1 canter has 16 seats. Includes service charges.
Price comparison
| Group size | Jeep safari total | Canter safari total | Better value |
| 1 person | Rs. 7,500 | Rs. 2,700 | Canter |
| 2 people | Rs. 7,500 | Rs. 5,400 | Canter |
| 3 people | Rs. 7,500 | Rs. 8,100 | Jeep |
| 4 people | Rs. 7,500 | Rs. 10,800 | Jeep |
| 5 people | Rs. 7,500 | Rs. 13,500 | Jeep |
| 6 people | Rs. 7,500 | Rs. 16,200 | Jeep |
| 12 people | Rs. 15,000 (2 jeeps) | Rs. 32,400 | Jeep |
| 16 people | Rs. 22,500 (3 jeeps approx.) | Rs. 43,200 | Jeep |
For groups of 3 or more travelling together, a jeep works out cheaper than individual canter seats every time. The canter makes financial sense only for solo travellers or pairs who want to access Dhikala without paying for a full jeep.
Guide fee of Rs. 900 is paid separately at the zone for both safari types. It is not included in either price.

Timings
Jeep safari:
| Slot | Timing |
| Morning safari | 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM |
| Evening safari | 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM |
Canter safari:
| Slot | Timing |
| Morning safari | 6:00 AM to 11:30 AM |
| Evening safari | 12:00 PM to 5:30 PM |
Safari timings are subject to change based on seasonal variations and Forest Department regulations. Confirm exact timings before your visit.
The canter morning slot runs significantly longer than the jeep morning slot, 5.5 hours vs 3 hours. For Dhikala’s large grassland terrain, this extended window makes a real difference to how much of the zone you can cover.

What’s included and what’s not
Both safari types include:
- All permit charges
- Driver fee
- Vehicle charges (jeep or canter)
- Zone entry fee
- Booking assistance and service fee
Both safari types exclude:
- Guide fee: Rs. 1000, paid directly by the guest at the zone gate
- Hotel or resort pick-up and drop (can be arranged separately)
Guide is mandatory for every safari in every zone. A government-registered guide must accompany the vehicle at all times. Changing guides or naturalists is not permitted once assigned. No guide means no entry.
Who should pick jeep and who should pick canter
Pick a jeep if:
You’re travelling as a group of 3 to 6. The per-head cost works out lower than canter seats and the experience is entirely yours. No strangers, no shared sightings, full control of pace within the zone.
You want to explore zones other than Dhikala. Jeep safari covers 8 zones. Canter covers 1. If Bijrani, Garjia, Jhirna or any other zone is on your list, jeep is your only option.
You’re a wildlife photographer or serious wildlife watcher. The open 4×4 format, flexible stops during sightings and access to narrower forest trails makes jeep safari the clear choice for anyone prioritising photography or immersive wildlife observation.
Pick a canter if:
You’re travelling solo or as a pair and want to experience Dhikala specifically. At Rs. 2,700 per seat, it’s far more economical than paying Rs. 7,500 for a full jeep for 1 or 2 people.
You’re part of a large group of 10 or more and want to stay together. 2 jeeps for 10 people costs Rs. 15,000. A canter for 10 seats costs Rs. 27,000. Wait, jeep still wins on price. But the canter keeps the group together in one vehicle, which matters for some group dynamics.
You want a longer morning session in Dhikala. The canter morning slot runs until 11:30 AM, giving you 5.5 hours inside the zone versus 3 hours on a jeep slot.
