Garjia is a core zone of the Corbett Tiger Reserve.

Same rules as Dhikala. Same permit category as Bijrani. Same level of protection as Jhirna. People label it a buffer zone online constantly. That’s wrong, and if you book based on that assumption you’ll show up at the gate with the wrong permit.

2 things make Garjia different from every other zone in Corbett. The Kosi River runs straight through it. And the Garjia Devi temple sits right inside the forest on a boulder in the middle of that river. No other zone in the reserve has either of those things.

What is Garjia zone?

Garjia is a core safari zone, managed directly under the Corbett Tiger Reserve authorities.

It’s part of Project Tiger. Vehicle quotas are controlled, permits are issued in limited numbers and every safari needs a licensed nature guide. The Forest Department runs this tightly.

The zone sits in the northeastern section of the reserve, about 14 km from Ramnagar town.

Location and access

  • Location: Northeastern section, Corbett Tiger Reserve, Uttarakhand
  • Nearest town: Ramnagar (14 km)
  • Managed by: Corbett Tiger Reserve, Uttarakhand Forest Department
  • Entry gate: Garjia Forest Gate

Ramnagar connects well by rail and road. Delhi is roughly 260 km out. Haldwani is 50 km. Nainital is 65 km. If you’re already based near Dhikala or Bijrani, you don’t need to shift accommodation to access Garjia.

Drive time from Ramnagar to the gate is 20 to 25 minutes on a clear day.

Forest permit: what you need

A core zone forest permit is mandatory. No exceptions, no workarounds.

Step by step: how to get your permit

Step 1: Use the official portal only
Book through the official Uttarakhand Forest Department website or the designated Corbett Tiger Reserve booking portal. Permits from anywhere else won’t hold up at the gate.

Step 2: Select Garjia under core zones
It’s listed specifically. Pick it. Wrong zone selection means your permit is useless when you arrive.

Step 3: Pick your date and slot
Morning slots (6 to 9 AM) go faster. In peak season, October to March, book 45 to 60 days out. Don’t leave it late.

Step 4: Enter every guest’s details accurately
Everyone on the permit carries the exact same ID on safari day. One name mismatch and you’re turned away. No exceptions.

Step 5: Pay and download your e-permit
Non-refundable after confirmation. Save the receipt and the permit. Have both on your phone or printed before you leave.

Step 6: Arrive 30 minutes before your slot
No grace period. Late means forfeit. No refund.

Permits are non-transferable. The names on the permit must be the people at the gate. If an operator is booking for you, check your name is spelled correctly before payment clears.

Safari types and timings

Wildlife you can spot

The Kosi River changes everything about the wildlife here. Species that need water year-round, elephants, otters, gharial, fish owls, show up in Garjia in numbers you won’t see in the dry sal zones.

AnimalNotes
Asian ElephantHerds of 30-plus cross the Kosi floodplain regularly, especially evenings
Bengal TigerResident population; sightings recorded consistently
Indian LeopardMost active at dawn and dusk
Sambar DeerVery common throughout
Spotted Deer (Chital)Large groups near grassland edges
GharialKosi riverbanks; best in winter mornings
Mugger CrocodileKosi riverbanks year-round
Smooth-coated OtterActive along the Kosi
Great HornbillTall riverside trees
Himalayan Fish OwlEvenings near the riverbank
Indian SkimmerWinter months on the Kosi
Migratory WaterfowlNovember to February from Central Asia

Garjia is probably the best zone in Corbett for elephant sightings. Large herds move through the floodplain in the late afternoon with regularity. If elephants are your reason for coming, this is the right zone.

Garjia Devi temple

The temple sits on a large rocky outcrop in the middle of the Kosi River. It’s dedicated to Goddess Garjia, a form of Parvati and is one of the most visited shrines in the Kumaon hills.

Pilgrims come year-round. Kartik Purnima in November brings thousands over a single day.

Pilgrims visiting solely the temple can access it through a designated approach route that doesn’t require the full safari permit. Entry into the broader zone for wildlife viewing needs a valid core zone forest permit. Check current access rules with the local Forest Department office before you go, as these shift seasonally.

Best time to visit

SeasonMonthsWildlife activityWhat to expect
Peak seasonOctober to FebruaryHighCool and dry; animals near water; excellent elephant sightings
Summer seasonMarch to JuneVery highHot but vegetation thins out; tiger and elephant sightings increase
Monsoon seasonJuly to SeptemberZone closedNo public safaris

November to March is the best overall window. Wildlife activity is high, temperatures are comfortable and the Kosi is at its best after the monsoon.

November to February for birds. Migratory waterfowl arrive from Central Asia and resident species like the great hornbill and Indian skimmer are highly active on the riverbanks.

March to June for tigers. Vegetation drops away in summer, animals concentrate near water and sighting probability goes up considerably.
